Princeville
Baptist Church "Preaching the Book, the Blood and the Blessed Hope"
Services:
The Princeville Baptist Church was started with a Bible study led by Grant Rice of the Ashburn Baptist Church of Chicago in February, 1970. The first church service was called from West Virginia to serve as the first Pastor in August, 1970. Many members were added during the 2 years of his ministry here. During his ministry the building at the corner of Walnut and Main Streets was purchased from Paul Streitmatter. As a result of purchasing the building, the church applied and received papers to incorporate. Subsequently, the church called Rev. Glen Foster from Madison, Wisconsin. He served and worked hard to help the church grow. But he was called to another church in June, 1974. In June of 1974 Bobby Bridgeman of Tennessee Temple filled the pulpit for a period of 2 years. In June of 1976, Lyle L. Thompson from Saginaw, Michigan came to pastor the church. In February of 1977 land was donated by Mr. and Mrs. Karl Keller for a church building at the corner of Douglas Street and South Cottage Grove Avenue. On April 3, 1977 ground was broken for the new church building. The outside work was done by contractor, Bryant Meyer, Inc. and Dave Stonale, Contracting Co. from Pekin, IL did the interior, aided by family church members. In September, 1977 Pastor Thompson started Princeville Christian Academy with thirty-one pupils in attendance. The school has had a great influence on those who attended, and many have gone on to Bible schools and colleges. The school operated until May, 1985. It was closed because of high costs and low attendance. Pastor Thompson left and accepted a call to another church. Dr. Gordon Edginton, Director of the Association of Independent Baptist Churches of IL acted as interim pastor until the church called Rev. R.D. Steinhous of Waterville, Minnesota. He moved his family to Princeville in June 1979. He was Administrator of the Academy for 6 years being a great asset to the school and church. He accepted a call from Farmington, Minnesota January, 1986. Dr. Gordon Edgington again filled the pulpit as Interim Pastor until August, 1986. Phillip Sherwood was accepted as pastor in August, 1986. He purchased a home at the corner of Douglas and Tremont Streets, where he is living presently. He is a graduate of Moranatha Bible College. Some of the children of the church are attending Chillicothe Calvary Baptist Christian Church, and others are attending Oak Grove Christian Church School at the Oak Grove Church.
